After the Independence Day celebration in UBS, we students got an interesting opportunity from LG electronics. LG
electronics India is working on a project aiming sales, consumer
behavior and analytics. LG is hiring management students to accomplish their
aim. Job responsibilities included to be on the floor, to interact with consumers, understanding their needs, helping in sales and reporting the sales to LG. Being a fresher, I had a strong desire to pick the opportunity so,I went for it.
Little nervousness was on my mind for facing first interview for a job purpose. Still I had a contrasting feeling like "let's just face it and there has to have first time for everything". At that time, though I had aspirations to get the project, experience of being interviewed by Marketing professional and HR of LG was important. Along with me, fifteen more students went for project from UBS. Interviews went smoothly, and I got selected along with eleven more people.I had set up a seasonal business of firecrackers in my undergraduate days along with my school friends in Karjat. So, sales was not a new thing for me, and this experience of mine helped me answering questions in interview. Cracking interview was not any big achievement, getting selected on first interview has a different feeling altogether.Joining date : 24th Aug,13.
Working days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Duration: 3 months
Job location : Croma, Mulund.
People joining, had to live in Mumbai-Thane region for weekends. I decided to stay at my Uncle's home in Thane. We were trained for a day in company office. We were told to be ready to learn few facts and techniques important for sales, from people who were very less qualified by us. I accepted that as experience teaches you more than books, people training us were pretty well experienced in sales.
First day-
As people say go at least half an hour early on your job's first day, I went an hour early. At 1000, externally examined my workplace, it was closed. It was a medium size store, not too big- not too small. At 1030, I got inside from back entrance. I had number of my immediate boss, Azam sir. Everything was new, new people, new terminologies. Store manager gave a briefing to start the day. I introduced myself to him, we had a nice interaction.
I was told to be in Home Entertainment section.i.e TV, mp3 players section. TVs were not organised according to brands. I had to search for LG TVs, I wrote down model numbers and prices. I tried recalling features of TVs told to me in training session. Azam Sir told me that he would be coming at 12.30. Oh crap! Customers started to enter in, and I knew only features of LG. Questions started revolving around my mind like,if any customer asks me to give demo, and compare LG with other brands, what shall I say about other brands? I wiped those questions out of mind and started introducing myself to other brand promoters. I asked them the questions I had, and everyone helped me in every manner.And I started attending customers, keeping everything away and humbly helped them in the way I can.
At 1230, Azam Sir came in. A charming,young guy around 25-26 yrs of age, energetic person. I welcomed him "Good afternoon sir, I am Saurabh", I got reply "Sir vagera nai, Azam naam he mera call me Azam!" That reply and his personality got a soothing smile on my face. I started calling him 'Azam bhai'. Azam bhai is 2nd best salesperson on Croma, Mulund in terms of numbers. In terms of attitude and work, now I would rate him first. He trained me on floor, answered my all the questions. I got knowledge of business model of Croma, promoting strategies of LG. His guidance and friendliness helped making first day a pleasant one.
Toughest thing on first few days was to stand on the floor for more than 8 hrs. But as I started attending more and more customers, involving more in my work, pain in the body literally vanished. I want my life to be dynamic. I do not like to live with same things, same people around. Because of this project, I am living in 3 different places in a week.
- Monday- Thursday on UBS campus.
- Thursday night at my sweet home in Karjat.
- Fri-sun at my Uncle's place in thane.
- Sunday night, I travel to Karjat after work. Again a soothing night in home.
- And Monday morning at campus again to face new week.
